Nelson Marlborough District Health Board's layered approach to IT Security
Introduction
Nelson Marlborough District Health
Board (NMDHB) meets the community health needs of 130,000 New Zealanders through the planning and funding of personal health, Maori health, mental health and disability support services.
With 2,700 users online,
operations are based in Nelson and rely heavily on broadband and fiber optics to communicate with staff in Blenheim. Maintaining network efficiency is a crucial and sometimes daunting task.
Seeking an integrated
IT security solution, NMDHB chose a layered approach and adopted Websense Hosted Email Security, Websense Email Security and Websense Internet Threat Database.
The Problem
NMDHB's existing email system
still allowed spam to clog mailboxes and generated large numbers of false positives. There was also a great deal of concern about the possibility that employees could be exposed to inappropriate content.

Infrastructure Manager Terry Kemp said that protecting staff and the business from harmful and inappropriate material and reducing the time spent sorting blocked email was paramount in their search for a solution.
"We had internet usage policies in place but some members of staff just did not adhere to them. We still had a large number of employees accessing personal dating sights and TradeMe during work hours. Our
existing system did not scan the content of emails or their attachments and that was something we felt very strongly about changing", Mr Kemp said.
The Solution
NMDMDHB were looking for a single integrated
solution that was cost-effective, compatible with existing IT systems and provided the most up-to-date detection engines available.
The organisation implemented Websense's on-demand email service, Websense Hosted
Email Security, to monitor incoming email before it hits the company network, and is rolling out Websense Email Security internally for additional protection. To manage internet usage, NMDHB has implemented Websense
Internet Threat Database software.
Mr Kemp said that because Websense Hosted Email Security is housed externally his team has more time for focus on other tasks. There is no software patching, no repairs and no
life cycle management, the service is more sensitive and greatly improves bandwidth.
"Having our email controlled in-the-cloud takes the load off our in-house servers and the need for any day to day management,"
he said.
"We have removed the need to sort through spam for false positives, which was a time-consuming task that had to be performed daily. We can also monitor internet usage and the reporting tools really make
things easy."
